Barred Owl Strix varia
The barred owl is one of the most vocal raptors in the Southeast with a typical call that sounds like "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" They make many other vocalizations ranging from a short yelp or bark to a frenzied monkey-like call. Like many owls, these birds do not build nests, depending instead on cavities in dead or dying trees. Because of this, habitat loss is the main threat to their survival. Fortunately, barred owls will nest in well placed nest boxes, and this adaptability has ensured that their populations remain healthy.
