Black Vulture Coragyps atratus Once considered raptors, vultures were reclassified in 1994 after DNA analysis proved them to be more closely related to storks. Their habit of eating carrion, or dead, decaying animals, has given them the false reputation of being unclean. The vulture's bare head is an adaptation which allows them to stick their head within the carcass of a dead animal while keeping their feathers clean and preventing bacterial growth. In fact, vulture can ingest anthrax, salmonella, rabies, and even cholera without getting sick! Adoption Fee: $300 |
