The Vaughn-Jordan Backyard Wildlife Habitat Garden

Targeting the two most popular hobbies in the nation, gardening and wildlife watching, The Vaughn-Jordan Backyard Wildlife Habitat Garden at Callaway Gardens® just outside the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center is recognized as an official National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Backyard Wildlife Habitat™ site and Monarchs Across Georgia Certified Pollinator Garden. The garden serves as a highly visible model demonstrating how to turn small spaces into enticing wildlife refuges.

The garden was named in honor of the Vaughn-Jordan Foundation, whose generous donation helped fund the garden.  This design was created to enhance the existing demonstration garden funded by the Furniss Family when the VHCDC opened in 2000.  This garden serves an outdoor extension of the Joseph W. Jones Education Wing at the VHCDC and a wonderful tool for the Callaway Gardens education staff.

The Backyard Wildlife Habitat Garden includes the essential elements of a complete wildlife habitat: food, water, cover and places to raise young.  While most people recognize the importance of protecting the environment, few understand how just one person can make a difference.  Combining the requirements of wildlife a garden design in your community can provide migrating songbirds, butterflies and hummingbirds with refuge and protection against predators.
