2008 ART AND GARDEN WORKSHOP SERIES Oriental Watercolor Workshop Saturday, June 28, 2008 Session 1: Lilies 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Session 2: Peony 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Oriental Watercolor, also known as Chinese brush painting, with its emphasis on the beauty of simplicity, flowing brush strokes and graceful designs, reflects time-honored principles of Chinese philosophy and culture. Practicing Chinese brush painting helps one quiet the mind and expand creative self-expression and discipline. Work with bamboo brushes, using water color on rice paper, and develop confidence in your painting through demonstrations, individual instruction and practice. These classes are ideal for all ages with or without previous art training.
Instructor: Tehwan Tso, long-time student, now artist, has been teaching Chinese brush painting for the past 20 years.

Mastering the Butterfly: A Limited Enrollment Workshop in Digital Macrophotography Friday & Saturday, July 11 & 12, 2008 OR Friday & Saturday, July 25 & 26, 2008
7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (Friday) & 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Saturday) This workshop is designed for the experienced digital photographer with an interest in macro photography and with a camera capable of taking close-up/macro photographs. The workshop focuses on learning the fundamentals of macro photography using the butterfly as our primary subject in the setting of Callaway Gardens' Day Butterfly Center. The course begins on Friday night in the classroom, followed by an exclusive, closed-to-the-public, early morning photo shoot at the Day Butterfly Center. The instructor will provide individual coaching. Tripods are permitted. Following the photo shoot, enjoy a working lunch for uploading images into the computer, then a favorite-images session for instructor/group critique. The course ends with classroom instruction in advanced post-processing techniques of our butterfly images using PhotoShop PSCS2. Creative Botanical Journal Saturday, August 23, 2008
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. In this fun, fast-paced botanical journal workshop, participants will create and take home an original, bound journal of their own design; hand carved rubber stamps; supplies for image transfer and instructions. Techniques include botanical drawings, paper photo transfers, carving rubber stamps, collage techniques in combination with watercolor and ink, innovative design ideas for recording information about plants. Open to all skill levels.

Learn to get the most from your camera's automatic mode, how to use flash effectively, and master the macro feature - all in a fun and non-technical manner. The workshop includes classroom instruction, outdoor photo shoot, working lunch, and then a discussion about equipment readiness, including useful information about camera batteries, digital media cards, and care for your digital camera. Your instructor will walk you through the fundamentals of photography in an easy-to-understand manner. Explore many of your camera's features that are unlocked when you move beyond the auto mode. Practice your new skills in a photo shoot inside Callaway Gardens. After the shoot and a working lunch with the instructor, there will be a discussion covering a number of mini-topics, a question and answer session, and a preview of upcoming classes.

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Are you ready to include architecture such as houses, buildings, barns, fences, etc. in your drawings or paintings? There are techniques to represent three-dimensional objects on a flat picture plane. This workshop will offer instruction in how to draw things the way we see them in the real world including how to create atmospheric effects. We will be using structures in the Gardens for drawing on site. No experience necessary.

Mastering Exposure: Intermediate Topics in Digital Photography Saturday, October 4, 2008
9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This workshop is designed for the experienced digital photographer interested in using the advanced features of the camera to get perfect exposures in every shooting situation. The course includes a brief discussion of the fundamentals of photography, understanding and using the histogram to evaluate your exposures, understanding how metering works and the various metering modes, using exposure compensation, using exposure bracketing, using exposure lock and more. The instructor illustrates the various concepts and shows their practical use with his own images. In the afternoon session, ample time is allotted for questions.

Learn how to use pine needles from long leaf pines to make baskets and various other items using coil basketry techniques. This beginner's class will cover the basic skills needed to make a pine needle basket. When your project is complete, you will have a basket reflecting your own taste and design. Callaway Chapel in Autumn Watercolor Landscapes Saturday and Sunday, October 11 - 12, 2008

Join artist Ralph Taylor as he shares the secrets of using more pigment and color in your paintings. In this two-day workshop, you will focus on completing one masterpiece using the "wet on wet" and "dry brush" method. Bring watercolors, brushes, tape, and Arches 300lb. watercolor paper. We will be working in the classroom replicating images from photographs. Recommended for advanced students.

Capturing Fall Foliage in Watercolor at Callaway Gardens Saturday and Sunday, November 8 - 9, 2008 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Come visit Callaway Gardens and paint the splendor of the autumn colors. This workshop includes two days of painting from direct observation of nature. We will focus on capturing the landscape during the fall season. Weather permitting, we'll be outdoors. In case of rain, we'll paint indoors. Pat Fiorello is a professional artist, popular instructor and signature member of the Georgia Watercolor Society known for her vibrant watercolors inspired by nature. Workshop topics include simplifying your composition while painting on location, mixing colors to capture the fall landscape, and painting trees. Pat offers a variety of teaching approaches including demonstrations, instruction, critique and individual coaching while students paint on location. If you have never taken a painting workshop before, this weekend workshop is a fun and easy way to get started. All levels of painters welcome. Demonstrations will be in watercolor, however artists are welcome to use the medium of their choice.

Immerse yourself in the holiday spirit by rolling up your sleeves and creating your own custom-made wreath from fresh greenery. Our experienced Horticulturists and Volunteers will help you with the design. Join us and make as many wreaths as your jolly fingers can handle! Make one for your home or make two, one to keep and one to give to a friend or family member. Remember to bring your pruners!

Holiday Tweets for Wildlife Family Workshop Saturday, December 6, 2008

Holiday Topiary or Centerpiece Workshop Saturday, December 13, 2008

Choose from a tree-shaped topiary or centerpiece to create an evergreen holiday arrangement for a tabletop or fireplace mantle display. We'll adorn an oasis form with sprigs of fresh pine, juniper, and cedar that will last through the holiday season. Berries, seeds, and fruits of the season will complete the design to bring holiday cheer to any home. Remember to bring your pruners!

Hikes Join staff from Callaway's Education Department for a delightful hike! These enjoyable, guided programs take hikers through portions of the 11,500 acres of land owned by Callaway which only are accessible to visitors during specially scheduled programs. Sturdy walking shoes and drinking water are recommended. In case of inclement weather, hikes may be canceled. Reservations are required; space is limited. Age limits vary.
