January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October | November | December Prune off crape myrtle seedheads to encourage a robust repeat bloom. A rule to remember for crape myrtle … never prune any branches thicker than your thumb. If you need to prune your azaleas, get clipping before July 4. Azaleas start setting buds for next Spring right after this year's blooms fade. When in drought conditions, DO NOT fertilize. Growing plants demand high amounts of water, and you'll be hard pressed to keep up with them. Prolong the show of color in your floral borders by replacing annuals this month. Take out tired, leggy plants, and substitute new ones for more 'flower power'. Keep herbs productive by pinching off buds and growing tips to encourage new growth. Some herbs, like basil and parsley, will change flavors if allowed to flower.
