Programs must be arranged in advance and are dependent on staff availability.  Transportation, room, room set-up, and projector screen (if needed) will be conference services’ responsibility unless specified.  Cancellation must be within 36 hours.  Please call Sandy McKeen at Ext. 5153 to schedule programs.

 

I.  GARDENING
 
HERBAL DELIGHTS
$200 up to 50 people, price increases $50 per groups of 50.
Taste, touch, and smell the fragrance of fresh herbs.  Then look and listen as an Interpretive Horticulturist explains how to make herbal vinegar and a variety of herbal spreads.  Recipes and taste samples will be provided.

GARDENING FOR BUTTERFLIES

Learn how to lure these colorful insects into your yard and garden.  Discover the plants butterflies prefer as well as gardening techniques to make your garden a butterfly haven.

CALLAWAY - THE GARDENS AND THE FOUNDERS

Step back in time to explore the Gardens' early beginnings.  Learn the history of its founders and discover how their vision was realized.

CONTAINER GARDENING

EARTH-FRIENDLY GARDENING
(Intended for Adults)

With the multitude of choices, products, and pest control methods available to gardeners today, it’s easy to forget the simple, old-fashioned planting techniques that our great-grandparents used daily! Explore methods of planting, plant selection, weed and pest control, and harvest that work with the natural cycles of the earth rather than focusing on the largest crop or fastest maturity. Surprisingly simple and inexpensive, Earth-Friendly Gardening can be as much or as little as you want it to be!

Learn how to make beautiful, elegant Christmas decorations using fresh materials gathered from the garden, roadside, and your local grocery store or farmer’s market.

GARDEN TOOLS AND TIPS

Designed for beginners and green thumbs, this lively discussion and demonstration includes tips on growing and grooming.  See how using many essential, as well as “nice-to-have,” gardening implements can make gardening tasks easier.

Program type, length, and limitations: Demonstration, 45-minutes-1 hour, no maximum, and minimum 10 people.  Outside program if weather permits.

II.  NATURE EDUCATION

 

THIS IS FOR THE BIRDS
$175 per hour
Join us as we search for the beautiful birds that inhabit Callaway Gardens.  During this delightful outdoor walk, we’ll share with you tips on bird identification, as well as information on binoculars, checklists, and field guides.
Set-up needs: N/A
Program type, length, and limitations: Program meets at Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, Education Wing.  Participants should dress for the outdoors, including comfortable walking shoes.  Program length: Variable, 1 – 1½ hours.  Binoculars are provided or participants can bring their own.  Program is canceled if weather is inclement.  Minimum Participants: 6; Maximum Participants: 20.

HUMMINGBIRDS:  WINGED WONDERS

Discover the mystique of these flying jewels and learn how to invite them into your yard and garden with flowers and feeders.
Set-Up needs: (2) 8’ draped tables, screen, projector; theater style seating
Program type: Slide presentation and display table; 45 minutes - 1 hour in length; 10-125 people.

III. WALKS/TOURS
Participants should dress for the outdoors, including comfortable walking shoes.  Programs will be canceled if weather is severely inclement. 

 

CASON J. CALLAWAY MEMORIAL FOREST HIKE
$275
Experience the beauty of this 2,600-acre area, registered as a natural landmark with the United States Department of the Interior.  Learn about the unique ecology of the Pine Mountain region, as we hike through an upland oak-hickory forest and along a rushing stream through mountain laurel thickets.  Portions of trail are steep and rocky.
Needs of participants: hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes and drinking water are recommended.
Program type, length, and limitations: 2.5 mile hike, moderately strenuous over rough terrain; 3 hours (includes driving time); minimum age is 12; under 16 must be accompanied by adult.  Minimum 10 people; maximum 25.   Forest is located 10 miles SW of the Gardens.  Group must provide transportation to Forest.  Hike is canceled if weather is severely inclement.

VEGETABLE GARDEN VENTURE

There’s more to Mr. Cason’s Vegetable Garden than just vegetables!  Join our horticulturist guide as you view the fascinating array of flowers, herbs, vegetables, and agronomic crops.

Program type, length, and limitations: tour; 1 hour maximum 30 people, minimum 6 people.  Program is canceled if weather is severely inclement.

SEASONAL INTEREST WALK
(Suitable for children ages 10 yrs. and up)
$175
Enjoy the changing seasons and delight your senses with a stroll down one of Callaway Gardens’ trails.  Education Department staff will introduce you to areas of seasonal interest in the Gardens.
Set-up needs: N/A
Program type, length, and limitations: ¾ – 1 mile, moderately easy trail walk, with uneven, natural surface; 1 – 1½ hrs.; minimum 6 people; maximum 30.  Group must provide transportation to trail. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by adult.  Program is canceled if weather is severely inclement.
