Education

Part of Callaway Gardens' mission is to "provide a better understanding of the living world."  To communicate that understanding, the Callaway Gardens Education Department introduces and interprets the wonders of nature to visitors.

Although the department was created in 1967, education at the Gardens had its beginning long ago. Founders Virginia and Cason Callaway had great faith in the potential of people, and they knew the difference that opportunity and education could make.

Today the Education Department is the scientific and educational outreach of the Gardens.  A schedule of activities always includes a list of interesting classes, lectures, tours or demonstrations.  Every season brings its gift, and series of Discovery programs gives gardeners and nature lovers new seasonal topics to explore.  Classes vary over the years as the interests of guests change, but many topics such as growing azaleas, herb gardening, bird watching, butterfly gardening and attracting bluebirds are perennially popular.  Discovery programs also include trail hikes, environmental education sessions for school children and teacher workshops.

Another important facet of the department includes on-the-job training each summer for college interns.  The students, who are majors in fields related to the mission of the Gardens, join the department to gain experience and college credit.
